Addressing Health Challenges at NEHEMA Primary School

An evaluation mission was conducted at NEHEMA Primary School in Bukavu, South Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo, on September 11, 2024. This mission aimed to assess the school's readiness and needs in preventing the spread of the rapidly escalating Mpox epidemic declared an international health emergency by the W.H.O. on August 14, 2024.

Challenge

NEHEMA Primary School, a Lutheran charter school, faces significant health risks due to the lack of basic sanitation facilities and water access. The students and staff are vulnerable to the Mpox virus, exacerbated by the absence of water and soap needed for proper hygiene. Interviews with students revealed frequent occurrences of diseases such as cholera, typhoid fever, and genital infections, particularly among young girls. The school's infrastructure, including dilapidated classrooms and inadequate fencing, further contributes to these health risks.

Observations

During the mission, the following observations were made:

  • The school is located on a deteriorating hill slope, with its enclosure in poor condition.

  • Interviews with the school headmaster revealed a severe lack of resources, including teaching materials and basic infrastructure.

The mission team engaged with various stakeholders:

  • Students suggested improvements such as renovating classrooms, providing water, and building toilets.

  • School Authorities and Teachers emphasized the need for teaching materials, classroom renovations, and fencing improvements.

Proposed Actions

Recognizing the urgent need to mitigate these challenges, HoReSo proposed a comprehensive intervention plan focused on enhancing hygiene practices and improving the school's infrastructure. Key preventive measures include:

  1. Installation of water facilities.

  2. Construction of separate toilets for boys and girls.

  3. Placement of hand-washing stations at strategic locations within the school.

HoReSo's Recommendations:

  • Encourage students to practice proper hygiene, such as washing hands with soap and avoiding contaminated areas.

  • Advise authorities to manage resources efficiently and install hand-washing stations.

    Stakeholder Suggestions:

  • Students requested infrastructure improvements and hygiene facilities.

  • Authorities highlighted the need for educational resources and infrastructure development.

Results

The assessment identified critical areas for intervention to reduce health risks at NEHEMA Primary School. The proposed solutions aim to provide a safer and healthier environment for students, minimizing their exposure to Mpox and other diseases.

Conclusion

The needs assessment at NEHEMA Primary School highlighted significant challenges due to inadequate water and sanitation facilities, contributing to health risks among students. HoReSo's proposed interventions focus on infrastructure improvements and enhanced hygiene practices to mitigate these risks. By implementing these measures, the school can create a safer environment, ultimately safeguarding the health and well-being of its students and staff.
